Very infrequently, hyphal walls are very thick and reveal in phase contrast or differential interference contrast distinct layers. Two layers and even more can occasionally be found. This stratification of the cell walls is different from a similar appearance when thick walls of intrahyphal hyphae lay closely appressed to the inner wall surface.
