Anatomy Anatomy of haustoria

anatomy haustoria {in foreign ectomycorrhizae} presence

This item considers haustoria from the view point of a fungus which forms haustoria in a foreign ectomycorrhiza; the view point of the ectomycorrhiza concerns.
Frequently, it is not possible to decide whether haustoria are from a foreign fungus or from the ectomycorrhizal fungus under consideration. Some haustoria originate from Hartig net cells without any indication that the Hartig net is formed by two different fungi. In this case, the haustoria are regarded as haustoria of the ectomycorrhizal fungus itself. Some haustoria can be traced to Hartig net cell of a deviating type, or the haustoria reveal a different staining behaviour; this is indicative that the haustoria are caused by a foreign fungus.
