Anatomy of chlamydospores

As chlamydospores are regarded all roundish or ellipsoid or oval cells, whether they have outgrowths or specialized walls or not. They have thickened walls which may be coloured. It is irrespective whether the chlamydospores are true chlamydospores, i. e. whether they are provided with a definite envelope of a separate hyphal wall. The germinability is not easy to be examined.

It is frequently very difficult to decide, whether a chlamydospore laying on the mantle or on rhizomorphs is definitely a chlamydospore of the ectomycorrhiza in question. It has carefully to be looked for unequivocal connections between the subtending hypha of the chlamydospore and hyphae belonging doubtlessly to the ectomycorrhiza forming fungus (A). As long as such connections are not revealed, there is no proof for the affiliation to the ectomycorrhiza.
