Crystals have a different structure from cell walls, show a deviating refraction behaviour, are most of the time rather regularly shaped, and lay on the wall; if crystals are dissolved by strong acids, wall structures can often be seen as small remnants of the crystals, this is indicative of their origin below the outer wall layers.
