Morphology Morphology of the unramified ends

morphology unramified ends mantle surface {in general} habit

1 shiny
2 silvery
3 smooth
4 covered with soil particles
5 not smooth
6 glistening

Total reflection of light, caused by air included between the outer mantle cells, causes a bright white colour (A) or other bright colours, e.g. yellow (B), or blue-green (C); the silvery appearance is easily lost by touching the mantle, due to replacement of air by water; see darker patches on the slides.
