Mycorrhizae are furnished with small tubercles, papillae or grains, causing an appearance of sand-paper; ’densely’ and ’loosely’ are not strictly defined and are subject to personal experience. This colour photo shows a loosely warty surface at the tip, in proximal parts the warts are dense.
